I want to thank you all so much for your response to my previous post. All your comments, your support, prayers and love mean the world to me ♡

Yesterday I had a long talk with Daisy’s breeder about her medical file from the Medical Centre for Animals in Amsterdam where she was examined, and then we both realized something.

Daisy was terrified going into the medical centre, she had never been there before and because of corona I wasn’t allowed to stay with her during the examination. They first took two X-rays of her hips and back, without any sedation, and then they took neurological tests because both her hips and back were fine.

It is clear that Daisy has a neurological condition and that something in her brain hasn’t developed properly, her coordination is not good at all and she doesn’t have much balance in the backside of her body. Her muscles are also very weak in her hips and back. She walks, runs and sits not in a normal way.

But there are many different neurological conditions she could have, and both orthopedic specialists immediately assumed that she had this very rare condition called ‘Sensory Ataxic Neuropathy’. They however couldn’t and aren’t able to completely confirm this, all they can do is do more tests on Daisy to rule out some neurological conditions, but we wouldn’t be 100% sure that she has this super rare condition since there are no specific tests for it.
So they gave us the worst suspected diagnosis and we were totally in shock at that time.

Today, Daisy is very much a happy girl and she is full of love and enthusiasm. Her condition is neurological and congenital, which means that she doesn’t know any better and she doesn’t feel any pain. Every time we go for a walk, all she wants to do is have fun and play with other dogs.

Since her condition is neurological there is no cure, there is nothing they can do to help her. So I needed to make a decision: do I choose for more tests, putting Daisy through so much stress and pain again, just so that they can rule out other neurological conditions, but still I wouldn’t be absolutely sure that she has this super rare condition?

Today is my birthday... I’m 22 years old today.

And to be honest, I’d rather just forget about it completely. Because yesterday I heard the worst possible news I could’ve gotten when I went to the orthopedic specialist with my Daisy girl, and I still have trouble wrapping my head around it all.

I thought she might have hip dysplasia, that there was something wrong with her hips and her back. I thought there was something they could do for her – that she could have an operation, and that she could at least grow old with me in a good, happy and healthy way.

Instead I got the news that Daisy has a very rare, congenital neurological problem. It’s difficult for me to explain this in English, but I’ll try. Something in her brain, the part of her nerves that sends signals to other impulses and other cells of her body, hasn’t developed properly in the womb. Now that Daisy is growing so quickly, her nerves aren’t sending out the proper messages to her muscles in her back paws and hips, causing her muscles to slowly lose function. Over time, she will lose all muscle function.

There is no cure, and nothing can be done. I will have one other appointment with a neurologic specialist, but it’s only to rule out other neurological conditions. I can see now that Daisy is getting worse and she’s only 8 months old. And it breaks my heart to say that she won’t grow up to be very old.

This photo is from when she was just 6 weeks old, and I got to choose her from the litter. I immediately knew which one Daisy was (she was born with 4 other siblings, all girls) and I know that it was meant to be. Daisy is the sweetest and the happiest pup I could’ve imagined and I love her with all my heart.

I’m just so heartbroken to know that she won’t grow old with me, and that there is nothing we can do about it 💔

I’ve always tried to paint a happy picture on Instagram about my life, but the truth is, right now it’s one of the toughest times in my life. I suspected something was wrong with Daisy not long ago, since she was moving and running in a weird way, so I went to a dog physiotherapist yesterday. She examined Daisy and found that there is something wrong, probably with her lower back/spine and with both of Daisy’s hips. I was referred to an orthopedic/specialist and made an appointment for Monday for another exam so they can find out what’s wrong, and if it’s inherited (like Hip Dysplasia) or something neurological.

At the moment I’m very much hoping that it’s not inherited and that Daisy can make a full recovery, but I simply don’t know. The likelihood of Daisy needing special surgery and after that physiotherapy to recover are big.

These past few weeks have been very hard. Besides everything else that is happening, also with Lily, I can hardly believe that Daisy also has health issues. I want to be there for both Lily, she’s still recovering from her first surgery, and now my baby Daisy.

I love both of my dogs with my whole heart, and it’s been hard for me, but I have to be strong to be there for both of them and hope for the best possible outcome for Daisy, so that, in time, she will make full recovery.

I just want to share this with you and let you know. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

I will keep you updated and hopefully on Monday we will have some more answers.
