It’s very cloudy and rainy today here in The Netherlands – so what better than to stay in bed, wear your PJs all day long, eat some cake (because every day is a good day to eat lots of cake) and just binge-watch some tv shows? It’s the perfect day to share some of my favourite tv shows with you all. Since I mostly watch my series on Netflix, you are able to watch all of these series if you have Netflix. Please keep in mind that I have the Dutch Netflix – I’m not so sure that all of these tv shows are available worldwide. So, please keep reading if you’re interested to find out what my favourite Netflix tv shows are!
1. Gilmore Girls, 2000-2007, 7 seasons (+ extra Netflix revival)
First up is the series that I’ve grown up with watching: Gilmore Girls. I have the entire series on dvd and when I was younger, I used to watch it over and over again with my mum. A year ago Netflix decided to put all the seasons on their site, and I’ve been rewatching it since last month. I still enjoy it as much as I did when I was younger! Netflix also made a revival with the old cast: Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. When I found out they were doing a revival, my mum and I were so excited! However, unfortunately I don’t really like the revival. I prefer the original series way better.
Gilmore Girls tells the story of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. Lorelai got pregnant when she was only sixteen years young, and she left her home in Hartfort to raise her daughter (Rory) in this small, cosy town named Stars Hollow (I wish I could live there!). Lorelai and Rory have this special mother-daughter relationship, they’re more like best friends. I can really relate to that, because it resembles the relationship I have with my mum!
2. Reign, 2013-2017, 4 seasons (currently 3 on Netflix)
Normally I’m not really into historical fiction, but this series feels more like a fantasy series for me. I knew about this series for a long time, but only decided to watch it this summer, when I found out that three of the seasons were on Netflix, and I didn’t have anything else to watch at the moment. Reign is about an alternative version of the life of Mary Stuart (Queen of Scots, 1542-1587). Adelaide Kaine plays Mary Stuart, and I think she’s done a wonderful job – I didn’t really know her before Reign, but I love her acting and I’m sure I’ll watch plenty more of her (future) tv shows/movies.
3. The 100, 2014-now, 4 seasons so far
The 100 is a sci-fi tv series. It begins with a nuclear war that has destroyed most of Earth. A couple hundred survivors live in this spaceship, but oxygen is running out. Therefore, they decide to send one hundred prisoners down to earth, to see if it’s viable. These prisoners have to survive the earth, where nothing is what it seems to be – are they really the only survivors, or are there others out there?
I started watching this series a couple of years ago, when one of my friends recommended it to me, and I haven’t stopped watching ever since. I know that this series has become immensely popular, but let me tell you: it definitely lives up to the hype! The special effects are amazing, the acting is great… I just can’t wait for season 5 in 2018!
4. Between, 2015-2016, 2 seasons
It’s been a little while since I last watched Between, but I really loved this series when it came on Netflix. It’s a Canadian sci-fi series by Netflix, and it follows the story in a town named Pretty Lake. Everyone from the age 22 and older has died from a mysterious disease, and the citizens still living in Pretty Lake have to try to survive and stay alive, while not being able to escape to the outside world.
I started watching this series because the plot sounded really intriguing, and it definitely didn’t disappoint. The only downside I can think of, is that the series only has two seasons, and (correct me if I’m wrong) I think Netflix has cancelled the third season.
5. Orphan Black, 2013-2017, 5 seasons
Orphan Black starts with a woman (Sarah Manning) witnessing a suicide from a woman who looks exactly like her. Sarah decides to take the identity of the woman who just committed suicide, but then she discovers that she’s a clone. There are lots of clones (‘sisters’) and they’re all part of an illegal human cloning experiment. The series stars a Tatiana Maslany, an Emmy award winning actress – she got an Emmy for her role in this series. She plays all the sisters/clones in Orphan Black, and, honestly, her acting skills just blew my mind! This series is definitely worth watching if you haven’t yet.
These were some of my favourite series on Netflix! Have you watched any of these? And do you also have some recommendations for me? I’m always looking for some good tv shows to watch!
